Ferreira is the favorite to win the 2022 MLS Top Goalscorer Award

As we approach the mid-point of the 2022 MLS season, there will be a lot to look forward to if the first half of the year is anything to go by.

The race for a place in the postseason looks to be as fierce as ever, with a plethora of teams all still in the running for a playoff spot due to fast starts. Naturally, this has been possible as they have players who have been able to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

This has led to a significant amount of interest in regard to who the leading goalscorer will be once the 2022 MLS season comes to an end, with it being a particularly interesting sub-category for fans to witness and enjoy.

While they may not necessarily be able to single-handedly take their team to the postseason and potentially win the MLS Cup, the player who does manage to finish top of the leaderboard at the end of the year will earn a number of plaudits and recognition for his abilities on the soccer field and to find the back of the net. Indeed, it could also end up potentially gaining the player a move abroad if clubs take notice and become interested.

However, which players are most in line to be able to win the award for the 2022 MLS Top Goalscorer this season?

Multiple players are already in the running

Unsurprisingly, there are already a number of talented players who can be considered to be in the running for the award this season, despite the fact that we are only just about halfway through the season.

Both Jeremy Ebobisse and Jesus Ferreira of San Jose and FC Dallas respectively lead the charts at this moment in time with nine goals each, but they are closely followed by two players who have eight strikes to their name thus far.

FC Cincinnati’s Brandon Vazquez and Sebastian Driussi of Austin FC are those that are close by, while there are a host of individuals who are currently sitting on seven goals, including New England Revolution’s Adam Buksa and Toronto FC’s Jesus Jimenez.

Who is the favorite to win the 2022 MLS Top Goalscorer Award?

Naturally, while all of the players listed above will be considered to be strong candidates to win the award at the end of this season, there is one individual that has been tipped to come out on top.

If you check out the soccer betting markets available, you will be able to see that Ferreira is considered the favorite, as he has been listed with a price of +550. Driussi is not far behind the FC Dallas man, though, as he has been listed at +650, whereas Ebobisse has been provided odds of +700 to round off the top three.

Other names have been listed, but it does not appear as though many are backing them as much as the aforementioned trio to pull off this rather major personal achievement.

Why is Ferreira being backed as the favorite?

Many will not be surprised that Ferreira is considered to be the betting favorite for the 2022 MLS Top Goalscorer award, as his performances recently have suggested he will be in contention to win at the end of the regular season.

The Colombian-born USMNT international might still only be 21, but he appears to have really found his touch already. He has nine goals in 15 MLS matches thus far, while he netted four of the five goals past Grenada for his national team in a recent CONCACAF Nations League match over the latest international break.

Son of David Ferreria – who also used to be a footballer for FC Dallas a decade ago – Jesus continues to excite fans with each performance that he puts on the soccer field, regardless of whether that be for his club or adopted country.

Verdict

There will certainly be a lot of fans watching what the youngest does on the pitch in the second half of the season, and it would be far from a shock if he were to be crowned the 2022 MLS Top Goalscorer. Let’s not forget that there are other players in the running, but given his recent form, it would be hard to see any other player keep up with him.
