Giannis Antetokounmpo was born on December 6, 1994, in Athens, Greece to his Nigerian parents. He began playing basketball in 2007, and in 2011 he joined the neighborhood team Filathlitikos, a Greek professional basketball club founded in 1986. He played for the team for two seasons, with his final season seeing him average 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 1.0 blocks. He then announced his intent to enter the 2013 National Basketball Association Draft and from there he started his NBA journey.
