From commanding 30,000 fans before Metallica to racking up over one billion song streams and collaborating with icons like Dolly Parton and Slash, Dorothy Martin is modern rock with teeth. The stunning frontwoman of rock band DOROTHY, she’s equal parts raw power, faith-driven confidence, and don’t-mess-with-me energy – and she’s just getting warmed up.

In your own words, tell us who you are and what you do. Hi, my name is Dorothy Martin. I front a rock n’ roll band called DOROTHY and write songs.

Looking back, which moment made you think, “Okay… this is really happening”? We played WELCOME TO ROCKVILLE to about 30,000 screaming fans right before Metallica. They were chanting “DOROTHY! DOROTHY!” It was awesome and surreal.

You’ve collaborated on songs with music legends Dolly Parton and Slash – what did each of them teach you? They were both excellent examples of big names who remain humble and kind. They were both the utmost professionals, and both have great personalities on top of it. I look up to both Slash and Dolly and will always be grateful they took the time to work with me.

What’s the biggest misconception about being a woman leading a modern rock band? That it’s hard. Just kidding, it is hard. We grind on tour. Life never gets boring!

Be honest, what’s the first thing people usually get wrong about you? I think sometimes they may feel I’m unapproachable, but I try to take the time to genuinely interact with people. I know how special and important music is to them. It certainly is to me and we share that bond.

If someone Googles you at 2 a.m., what do you hope they find? A song that helps them with whatever hardship they may be going through.

What’s one rule you’ve broken that you’re glad you did? I never conformed to the idea of going to college and getting a “real job”. What I do is a REAL JOB! Actually, it feels like a calling. I’m not advising readers to skip college, but I’m so glad I followed my heart instead of doing what the world told me I “should” do.

Biggest guilty pleasure you’ll never give up? True crime documentaries – I want to know how these weirdos think. Psychology fascinates me. I also can’t stop collecting books.

On a scale from 1 to “iconic,” how would you rate your own confidence? Lately my confidence is through the roof and I owe it all to my faith.

What’s the most unexpected compliment you’ve ever received? Someone told me I was a “high value woman” and not to settle for the treatment I was receiving. That really stuck with me.

What’s something you’re way better at than people would assume? Writing songs, which I love to do and play a major role in, though I prefer collaborating versus writing completely alone. I also kickbox and train Muay Thai. I can throw a punch.

If confidence had a soundtrack, what song are you walking in to? Intergalactic by the Beastie Boys.

What do you find instantly attractive? Honesty and humility.

What’s one thing that always gets your attention? When someone is present and emotionally intelligent.

Ideal spontaneous getaway – where are we going? The Greek Island Santorini! It’s like a slice of Heaven on earth.

What’s next that’s going to surprise people? I may have a new song coming with a rock friend of mine who I greatly admire. Five years from now, what would make you look back and say, “Yeah, I crushed that”? Singing the National Anthem to a full LA stadium – a very special moment I was honored to have. Finish this sentence: People would be shocked to know that I… Became a born-again Christian in rehab in 2020.
